Following the severe shortage of water and coal in the traditional hydropower province Sichuan this summer, the power supply situation is severe. After the local energy efficiency control of high-energy-consuming enterprises has been implemented, some high-energy-consuming industries in Yunnan have entered the second round of production and power restrictions.
On September 14, Yunlu Aluminum Co., Ltd. (000807.SZ) issued an announcement saying that since September 10, the company and its subordinate electrolytic aluminum enterprises have carried out energy consumption management by means of tank shutdown, and the electricity load will be reduced by 10% before the 14th. Shenhuo Co., Ltd. (000933.SZ) also issued an announcement stating that its subsidiary Yunnan Shenhuo received the "Notice on Emergency Start-up of Electrolyzer Energy Management" from the Wenshan Power Supply Department.
Just in late August, the power curtailment requirements in Sichuan Province were upgraded again, which had a significant impact on the production capacity of the electrolytic aluminum industry. According to SMM statistics, the operating capacity of electrolytic aluminum in Sichuan Province was 1 million tons at the end of June. After entering August, the power supply situation became more severe, and the scale of production reduction of aluminum plants expanded.
The 21st Century Business Herald reporter found out that this is not the second time that the high-energy-consuming industries in the major hydropower provinces have encountered production cuts. According to Baichuan Information data, after May 2021, due to factors such as low water supply in Yunnan and dual control of energy consumption, the production capacity of electrolytic aluminum in Yunnan will be reduced by 1.605 million tons. In addition to accidents and other factors, the total production will be reduced by 1.83 million tons, accounting for 2021. 49% of the total national electrolytic aluminum production reduction.
