The Mysteel aluminum research team conducted a survey and calculated on electrolytic aluminum enterprises across the country. In August 2022, the weighted average complete cost of China's electrolytic aluminum industry was 17,094 yuan/ton, a decrease of 75 yuan/ton compared with July. Compared with the average spot price of 18,534 yuan / ton of aluminum ingots in Shanghai Steel Union that month, the industry-wide profit was 1,440 yuan / ton. Among the various cost items in August, the cost of alumina increased slightly, the electricity price was basically the same as that of the previous month, and the cost of prebaked anodes maintained a downward trend. The performance of electrolytic aluminum costs declined slightly, and aluminum prices closed up month-on-month, driving the average profit of the electrolytic aluminum industry to increase by 474 yuan/ton month-on-month in August, the first rebound in the past five months.
The macro sentiment in August was repeated between the Fed's hawkish interest rate hike expectations and the European energy crisis. European production capacity was frequently reduced but the total amount was limited; the domestic inventory was limited, and the power cut in Southwest and other places reduced the monthly production of electrolytic aluminum. Power cuts and the spread of the epidemic in various places also brought pessimism about the recovery of consumption. On the whole, the fundamental supply and demand situation has improved marginally, and the average spot price in August rose by 399 yuan/ton from the previous month.
