China’s bauxite imports found decreased in July by China Customs from a month ago as rainy season lowered the supply from Guinea.
Data showed China imported a total volume of 7,280,000 tonnes of bauxite in July, compared to 7,440,160 tonnes in June. This means the volume dropped 2.2 per cent month-on-month but grew 18.2 per cent year-on-year as the bauxite import volume in China had stood at 5,955,040 tonnes during the same period last year.
In the first seven months of this year, China imported 49,580,000 tonnes of bauxite in total, up 29.8 per cent from 34,805,160 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
Guinea remained the top exporter of bauxite to China in July 2018. Out of 7,280,000 tonnes, it shipped 2,960,000 tonnes to China, accounting for 40.6 per cent of the total bauxite import by China in July. In June, Guinea had accounted for 44.6 per cent of the total volume of bauxite secured by China, by exporting around 3,258,960 tonnes. Nonetheless, Guinea’s bauxite export to China in July 2018 stood higher than the same period last year, as some Chinese companies stepped up mining efforts in Guinea.
In August, Alufer Mining secured a long-term agreement with China State Power Investment Company (SPIC). The Bel Air mine in Guinea will provide stable supplies of quality bauxite to SPIC’s alumina refineries.
China's bauxite imports from Guinea are set to grow as more mining capacities are commissioned.
Followed by Guinea, Australia stood as the second largest exporter of bauxite to China in July 2018. The volume grew 13.6 per cent from 2,255,040 tonnes in June 2018 to 2,610,000 tonnes in July 2018, accounting for 35.8 per cent of the overall imported volume.
Indonesia exported 511,000 tonnes of bauxite to China in July, down 28 per cent from 367,920 tonnes in June.
The imported bauxite prices grew 1.8 per cent from US$ 52.8 per tonne to US$ 53.8 per tonne and 7.3 per cent from US$ 49.8 per tonne a year earlier. This indicates that China’ total bauxite import cost in July 2018 stood at around US$ 392, 0.29 per cent down from June.
